Automatic Powder Fire Extinguishing System
Automatic powder fire extinguishing systems (APFES) are included in the system of fire safety of the facility (buildings, structures, devices, units) and are used where fire extinguishing with water, foam or water spray is not possible and extinguishing with gas is not cost effective.
Finely disintegrated mineral salts used in systems of automatic powder fire extinguishing are highly effective quick-acting means for fire fighting. According to SP 485.1311500.2020, powder fire extinguishing is used to eliminate fires of A, B and E classes (electrical equipment under voltage). In special cases, for example when extinguishing alcali metals, powders may be the only applicable fire extinguishing means.

Powder fire extinguishing systems are widely used for protection of such facilities as chemical plants, oil bases and fuel stations, compressor rooms and pump stations, oil and gas pumping stations, oil transformers and electrical substations, gas boilers and diesel generators, rolling mills, cable tunnels, hydraulic systems, airplane hangars, tankers for CNG and LPG, oil warehouses and fuel-storage depots, laboratory premises and equipment, storage of dangerous goods etc.
Application of powder fire extinguishing systems is not allowed in premises with more than 50 people present, which may not be left by people before the fire extinguishing power supply.
It is not allowed to use the APFES for extinguishing of flammable materials inclined to self ignition and smouldering within itself (wooden chips, grass meal, cotton etc.) and pyrophoric substances inclined to smouldering and combustion in the absence of air.
According to the scheme of building, the APFESes may be centralized (aggregated), local and autonomous. A centralized unit, as a rule, has a common storage reservoir of extinguishing substance, a network of distribution pipelines and is launched according to the signals from the automatic fire alarm equipment or manually from the operator. A local unit is composed of one or several fire extinguishing modules located at the protected area of the facility, as in the first case, a group or all modules are launched via the signal from the automatic fire alarm equipment or manually from the operator. Autonomous modules, contrary to the modules of the local system have its own launch devices or are actuated due to heating of the casing and do not require signals from external systems.

By the extinguishing method the APFESes may be of volume, surface and local fire extinguishing. In case of volumetric fire extinguishing, the extinguishing powder fills all the space of the premises fenced by construction structures. In case of surface fire extinguishing, a stream of powder is directed to the horizontal surface with a supposed place of ignition, for example, shelves with flammable substances, in this case fire dangerous areas and the place of module installation is determined at the stage of design and the direction of the powder stream is adjusted during mounting. Local units, as a rule, are installed at places inaccessible in case of volumetric and surface fire extinguishing (areas fenced by structures, cabinets, electrical control panels etc.)

Design and mounting automatic powder fire extinguishing systems is implemented together with a fire alarm system and warning and evacuation management system (WEMS). Facilities protected by the APFESes are equipped with illuminated-indicator panels with indication of the request to leave the premises and the fire extinguishing system is actuated with a delay required for evacuation of people from the protected premises.
Design and mounting of the APFESes may be implemented only by organizations that have a special valid license of the Ministry for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Response for such works.
